Horses of Clay
I make clay sculptures that have been inspired by a lifetime working with horses. Horses are my friends and my teachers, they have enriched my life and opened my heart.
I think my sculptures reflect aspects of my personality. Rare steeds are earthy and wild, part of nature but in harmony with it. Horse talk ladies are humorous and inspired by a lifetime of talking horses and observing horsey people. Jinba Ittai is aspiration, a striving for harmony and balance in the human horse relationship.
My sculptures are fashioned by pinching pieces of clay together, some pieces are smoothed others are left rough. After bisque firing I decorate with oxides and glaze and fire to 1180°c in an electric kiln. Each sculpture is unique and takes on a life and spirit of its own.
My thrown work represents my respect for the food we eat which keeps us well and healthy, and the continual quest for perfection and hard work needed to create a beautiful pot.
My work is continually evolving; the very nature of clay invites exploration.
